Lord’s Day Reflections: WCF 3.5

Those of mankind that are predestinated unto life, God, before the foundation of the world was laid, according to His eternal and immutable purpose, and the secret counsel and good pleasure of His will, has chosen, in Christ, unto everlasting glory, out of His mere free grace and love, without any foresight of faith, or good works, or perseverance in either of them, or any other thing in the creature, as conditions, or causes moving Him thereunto; and all to the praise of His glorious grace.

Westminster Confession of Faith 3.5

If you’ve ever felt like you have nothing to offer God, then this doctrine is very good news. If you’ve ever thought that there is nothing in you that makes you more acceptable to God then your unbelieving neighbors, this doctrine says that you are right and that it’s all a part of the plan.

God does not elect based on foreseen faith. He doesn’t elect because some people have lots of potential. He didn’t pick you thinking you’d “do great things for the Kingdom.” You’d probably be a fantastic disappointment. God’s reasons for election are hidden from us now, but we know that His decisions glorify Him.

You weren’t picked because of anything you have done or anything you will do. You were picked because God decided to glorify Himself by saving you. Not even you and I can screw that up—hard as we may try sometimes.
