It’s been a while since I’ve posted to this blog, so please don’t mind if I take a paragraph break to blow the dust off the site.
Suffice it to say, it’s been a while. My time was split between Helvetic, and the late We Distinguish. The latter now being put down, I imagine I’ll have some stuff to post here again—not the three posts per week I had been aiming for before, but you know, some stuff.
Actually, this post fits into the category, “some stuff.” Speaking of this post, I should get on with it, shouldn’t I?
A 2017 Goal
On a recent Helvetic episode, Joe and I discussed the idea of growing as a designer. One of the things we talked about was people who try to create stuff every day. Sometimes this is a month-long deal like Inktober, and sometimes it’s a whole year or more like Beeple and other CG artists. I’ve decided to do something like that for 2017. I’ll be trying to post something everyday in 2017, wth a few caveats.
The Fine Print
First of all, not everything I make is gold, gold plated, or even yellowish. The point of this exercise isn’t to give followers something gorgeous to look at everyday. Some days, you’ll like what I make (I hope). And sometimes, especially when I do sketches, you’ll wonder if I have a head injury. You can tell me that. I can take it. The head injury made me less self conscious, too.
Additionally, some of my “everyday” things won’t be the product of just one day. One thing I want to get better at is polish, and polished things often take multiple days. I’ll make sure to note how long multi-day projects take me. But just know that not everything I post will have taken just one day (or part of one day, since I don’t typically get more than 1–3 to work on personal things each day.
Lastly, I won’t be posting content on the Lord’s Day because I won’t be making stuff on that day and Christians have better things to do on Sundays than look at my Instagram posts. So expect six posts a week, not seven.
Also I’m not going to beat myself up if I miss a day, I probably will miss days when I have to work overtime or travel, but I’ll make sure to say something if I see a missed day coming.
What to Expect
Most of the stuff I post will be going on my Instagram. Here’s some of the stuff I’ll be posting:
- Photos, videos, timelapses, slow motion stuff from my iPhone or mirrorless camera
- Computer graphics (renders)
- Photos or videos with composited computer graphics
- Really bad sketches
- Bad dad-jokes in the form of comics
- Blog posts (those will probably be on here)
- Cool, fun-to-watch breakdowns of projects I’ve completed.
- Typographic compositions
- Possibly tutorials
- Possibly behind the scenes stuff on my Instagram faux-Snapchat-story-feed-ripoff-thing.
These are all things I want to get better at, so I’m hoping that you the person behind the voice in your head reading the words on the screen in front of you, will help keep me accountable by bugging me whenever I miss a day.
I’ve already posted my first couple posts, so follow me now if you want to see something sort of mildly interesting almost everyday in 2017.
